Tackling problems

Every now and then, even the most civil of relationships can deteriorate, but remember that if you do not tackle disputes sensibly, matters can easily escalate and become far more difficult to resolve. It is your responsibility, as a Fife Housing Association tenant, to try to resolve any problems in a reasonable way.

Many problems are the result of a misunderstanding. Maybe you work a night shift and your neighbour likes to play music early in the morning, just when you're trying to sleep. Cases like these can often be resolved by speaking to your neighbour, who has probably not realised that he is causing you sleepless nights!

It is always better to resolve problems in a friendly manner, directly with your neighbour. Keep your voice calm and conversational, and hopefully the problem won't recur.

But my neighbour won't listen!

If you have had to remind your neighbour of the problem a number of times and it is still an issue, now is the time to speak to your Housing Officer. We like you to write to us outlining what has happened, and how you have tried to resolve the problem. If other neighbours are having the same problem, ask them to put it in writing too.

Once your letter has been received, your Housing Officer will want to talk over the matter with you. Housing Officers will always deal with the matter sensitively and in confidence.

How can Fife Housing Association help resolve my problem?

Housing Officers can mediate in disputes, if both the person who complained and the person they complained about agree to the process. We recommend this as a very successful way of resolving problems.

In severe cases, where mediation doesn't work, we will consider more formal approaches, which might include legal action.

Do note that, if the worst happens, and you end up taking your neighbour to court, you may have to give evidence.

I think I'm being harassed

Harassment is a serious issue and we will consider evicting any tenant who harasses anyone else.

What about the law?

The Scottish Executive has put Anti-social Behaviour laws in place to tackle problems that can't be resolved in other ways. Fife Housing Association will use this legislation where we think a legal solution is necessary.

If you need more information about anything you have read on this page please contact us we have a dedicated Anti Social Behaviour Officer who can give you help and advice.
