Improve my home

Changing Rooms
Everyone dreams of improving their home, and it's not surprising when we're bombarded with TV programmes showing us just what can be done!
But whatever you want to do, even if it's just replacing the old shower attachment on your bath with a state-of-the-art power shower, you will need to obtain our written permission in order to benefit from your right to improve your home.
Don't worry! We're unlikely to refuse permission, unless you're planning to make some really major changes. If we do refuse permission, we will write to you with our reasons, and you will be able to appeal if you feel the decision is unfair.
If you need to make changes to your home to enable you to enjoy living independently, you may be able to get further help.
Grand Designs
If your plans include major building work, such as building a conservatory or extending into your loft space, you will need to obtain planning and building permission from Fife Council, as well as permission from us.
Where do I start?
First of all, check whether the improvements you want to make are on our approved repairs list or are part of something we're planning to do in our rolling maintenance programme. You can do this by phoning the office and asking to speak to Housing Services. If your improvement is covered, you may not have to pay!
What happens if I move house?
If your improvements have been carried out with our permission and fulfil the conditions set out below, you may be entitled to compensation! We have drawn up a list of common improvements with a guide to the level of compensation you can expect. You can get this leaflet from our office.
In addition, the work you've done must:
- Improve the value of your home
- Meet the necessary standards for safety, materials and workmanship
- Not affect our ability to let the home to other tenants if you move
- Have been approved by Fife Housing Association
- Have been given Fife Council planning and building permission and been subject to building control if appropriate
Applying for compensation has to be done in writing within a strict timeframe, so make sure you keep an eye on the date! When you apply, your tenancy must be ending within the next 28 days, or have ended within 21 days of our receiving your claim. If you need help applying for compensation, contact Housing Services.
