Be a good neighbour

We've all seen the horror stories on TV - the Neighbour from Hell who makes your life a misery. But most people enjoy being a part of a community and having the sense of security that that brings.

However, it can be difficult living in proximity with people who have different standards of behaviour to your own, and sometimes small matters can escalate into seemingly unsolvable disputes. But with a little give and take, and a few very simple precautions, everyone can be a good neighbour.

Respect your neighbour

Respecting your neighbours' equal right to live in and enjoy your community is the most important thing that you can do. Your tenancy agreement was designed with the comfort and peace of your home in mind - and your neighbours' home too!

Watch your noise!

Noise is the biggest cause of problems between neighbours. You should make sure that you keep noise to a reasonable level, particularly if you live in a flat and like loud music. If you live with other people, you are responsible for making sure that they keep their noise down too.

Keep your pet under control

We may be a nation of animal lovers, but no-one likes it when other people's pets stop them enjoying their local area. For this reason, you'll need to obtain our permission to keep a pet. Although a number of our houses are suitable for pets, do bear in mind that some accommodation is not, and we cannot, unfortunately, give permission. Places where you might not be able to keep a pet include flats, for example.

Pets can bring much joy, but you should also be aware that other people may not feel so comfortable around animals. If you have a dog, for example, make sure you clean up after it, and if you have a cat, try to dissuade it from littering your neighbours' gardens!
